Saturday
I waited what seemed like hours on that Saturday. I paced up and down the hot hall of my Mima’s house just waiting for that moment. We had only been living with her for four months when we got the news we had all been waiting for, the greatest news a little girl wants to hear. I couldn’t wait for the front doors to open. I knew things would be great again. A 10 year old can only wait patiently for so long at a time. I decided to try and entertain myself and not think too much of it, so I did all the chores that day, including the one’s my older sister Jasmine and younger twin brothers, Ricky and Eddie, were supposed to do. I fed the dogs, took the trash out and did the dishes after we all had lunch although I didn’t eat. Instead I played with my rice and kept my eyes at the door still waiting for the door to open. My grandmother was surprised since I never got chores done so fast before. I always made an excuse of having to use the bathroom and would literally force myself to potty in order to avoid doing any chores. She was also surprised at the fact I didn’t eat my lunch since she made my favorite, white rice with black beans and Cuban steak. Man is her steaks good. You could smell her cooking from our neighbor’s house. The lemony and onion seasoning and adobo aroma filled the house up. Nothing like an authentic Cuban meal from grandma. When I finished chores, I looked for more to do. I attempted to dust and pick up after the twins. They were messy. I mean I admit that a lot of their messiness came from me, but man they were messy. After they played with one toy they would leave it on the floor and grab more to add to their collection on the floor. The living room was full of Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They even had my Barbie’s laid out to make it look like I was apart of the tornado that was in the room. I wasn’t having that today, today was a major day for us and everything had to be perfect. So I picked up after them and got them to keep it all in the room instead of the living room. I also got them to stop playing with my Barbie’s and put them back in my backpack. By this time I was getting restless. I was giving up on when those doors would open so I did what most kids do, I sat in front of the television and watched my favorite Saturday show, Sailor Moon. A young junior high school girl with powers to protect her universe and her friends, I always wanted to be her. It was ..1:00 pm.. already, will the door ever open? Finally with out thinking about it anymore, I heard what sounded like a car door slam. “Is Mommy home?” I thought. She had left earlier that day to run some things by her mom’s house. I stood up from the floor and walked to the door through that hot hall way. As I got to the end of the hallway I turned the corner and finally saw the face, along with my Mommy’s, that I had been waiting to see home finally after two and a half years away from me. I now knew why she was taking so long. I couldn’t say anything. I was speechless and shacking as if I had been freezing. All I could do was cry, and then finally as he held me close I told him “I love you Daddy. Welcome home!” My family was back together again and it was all worth the wait at the end of that Saturday.
