I would like to address an issue that is vastly overlooked in polite society: House rabbits.

People go to visit pet stores, especially around Easter, and want to hold and pet all the cute, cuddly little bunnies that are for sale by the dozen in the little glass pens at the front of the store. All the little kids and girlfriends go nuts over them, pleading and begging to take one home.

So, Thumper finds a home. He gets back to the house, and everyone plays with him, petting and feeding him carrots and the like. The next thing you know, the little fellow is gnawing his way through your floorboards, table and chair legs and pretty much anything else he can get his little rodent jaws around.

You are at your wit's end, tearing your hair out, unable to stand another day of rabbit pebbles and wood shavings strewn across the floors of your home.

What do you do? Well, some have been known to liberate their floppy-eared friends into the woods, local parks and vacant lots.

This is not, I repeat, NOT the way to appropriately handle this situation.

If you ever, heaven forbid, find yourself in this predicament, try the following solutions:
-contact your local humane society and see if they accept rabbits
-visit your local newspaper and take out a classified ad (they're cheap) to try to find a home for your little friend
-go on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or other websites that offer free postings and try to find someone to give your rabbit a home.

But whatever you do, don't resort to releasing him into the wild. It's just not the right thing to do.

There is another great way liberate their floppy-eared friends..... twist and snap, then make soup of them. Rabbit is very tasty. Skin it, trim it, gut it, clean it, roast it with some carrots and onions and you can have a find feast for the family. Just tell the kids it is chicken. Long eared chicken.

You are a sick individual. I am not talking about *wild* bunnies, boykin, I am talking about *pet* bunnies. Like Thumper and Speckles and whatever else bunny names there are out there.

Good grief. I would hate to be a pet in your house, especially a 22-lb. cat.

theboykin commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Thumper was not a pet bunny. He was a wild cartoon bunny. Speckles though I do not know. Or that vampire bunny I read about in school in super fudge or what ever it was called by Judy Bloom. You ever have rabbit? I had some in St Louis and it was wonderful. Tasty and refreshing. I am not going to eat your pet, unless oyu set them free.

Well, well, well... our first blog entry that goes into the print edition.

Master_Shake commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Jake, you would do well to stay outta this.

Boykin, if I so much as see you *near* my pet bunny Armondo, we are gonna have words. Serious ones. You and me, at 4:01 p.m. next to the bike rack outside the front door.

PS - How "wild" could Thumper actually have been, to be named "Thumper?" Also, did you know that, up until the age of 24, I didn't know the ending to "Bambi" because my parents didn't want me to cry when Bambi's mother died?

*Apology to any readers who may be damaged by this info, and for spoiling the ending of a true Disney classic.

I much prefered Riki Tiki Tavi to that stupid cartoon rabbit and deer, anyhow. That was one cool mongoose.

Ness commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:15 PM

I was a Riki fan myself. It's actually one of the many nicknames I have for my dog, Amelia.

Boykin, I was a huge Judy Bloom fan back in the day. And yes, I believe it was called "Super Fudge."

theboykin commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:18 PM

First off Bambi's mother died at the start of the movie. Second bike rack and words sounds good. I will be careful of my declarative statements also. We need to be careful though because zombies could be lurking anywhere. Thirdly what would you name a wild rabbit? Glass Slayer? Fluffy the Conquerer? Fourth I think we can agree on Riki Tiki Tavi and the use of otamotapia (spelled how ever it is) is a wonderful tale of a mongoose the king of the great outdoors, in Michigan. Your just mad because Georgia is number one in the USA poll arent you? How is the weather up there anyhow?

Master_Shake commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:21 PM

It's hot. And I have no idea what this poll is that you're rambling about.

The zombies are scared of me, and will not come near me. I guarantee it. They know that they are no match for my superhuman speed and agility.

theboykin commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:22 PM

Zombies do not know fear, only hunger, like bunnies.

Master_Shake commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Well, fortunately for the bunnies, their brains aren't big enough to register on the zombie radar. And I can promise you that every zombie I've met has been scared of me.

theboykin commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Uh...so you have a really big brain? So would you say your freakishly tall or short?

Master_Shake commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Dude, in a million years, I don't think anyone would accuse me of being freakishly tall.

theboykin commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 5:58 PM

Ok that was fishing for information. Your mom still got that sign? The sausage one?

Master_Shake commented on Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Fishing for info, huh? You have me confused with someone else we know, as evidenced by that last comment. Keep fishin'.

Eat more than three cheese sticks and we can talk more.

Also your mom can not go to Flint Michagan anymore it seems.

Master_Shake commented on Wednesday, Aug 06, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Oh, that's too bad. She always prefered colder climates.

theboykin commented on Wednesday, Aug 06, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Oh yeah and everyone wants to save the bunnies but like song said carrots have feeling - they fear the harvest. If you feed carrots to bunnies it hurts them and can kill them also. Domesticated bunnies need to be feed pelets. It tears them up inside otherwise.

Master_Shake commented on Thursday, Aug 07, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Gee, I'm surprised you care about their insides....since all you want to do is EAT them.

theboykin commented on Friday, Aug 08, 2008 at 11:07 AM

There is no need to make them suffer though. I do not want to eat them while they are alive and kicking.
